2011 Subaru Tribeca

2011 Subaru Tribeca Review

Joe Duarte, Toronto Sun

Tribeca doesn't skimp on features

Subaru's midsize Tribeca sport utility vehicle continues to offer a classic exterior and practical interior as it heads into 2011.

Among the standard exterior features are LED turn signals integrated into the mirrors, fog lights, bright trim work, tinted rear windows, roof rails, high rear spoiler and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The standard projector beam halogen headlights can be upgraded to Xenon high intensity discharge (HID) units with manual level control.

Tribeca is one of the Subaru stable of five-star safety vehicles, thanks to a ring anti-deformation side structure, front and front side-impact airbags, front anti-whiplash head restraints, three-point belts for all seating positions and side air curtains for the front and middle row. Anti lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring and stability and traction control are also standard.

The well-configured interior offers the right mix of space, storage and seating to allow Tribeca to carry up to seven passengers, with an appropriate amount of space for take-along stuff. The interior offers up the craftsmanship associated with luxury utility vehicles and plenty of desirable features like power glass sunroof and rear-view camera. Upgrades include convenience features such as Bluetooth, navigation system, Harman Kardon premium sound system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The twin-cockpit interior puts necessary controls and dials around the leather wrapped wheel and within the driver's reach, while dual-zone climate control makes sure both front occupants get their desired level of comfort.

Well-padded and supportive seats are cloaked in premium fabric or available in leather. The front seats are power adjustable and heated; the middle row folds flat in a 40/20/40 split and the rear 50/50 split bench also folds flat. All told, the cabin can be configured 64 different ways and hold up to 2,106 litres of cargo.

Power comes from a 3.6-litre six-cylinder version of the praised Subaru boxer engine, using a five-speed automatic transmission and its equally lauded symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive system to put power to the road.

Variable power assisted steering and a fully independent suspension (front strut; rear double wishbone) insures Tribeca handles everything thrown in its way in any of the four seasons.
